WINDHEAT will develop a state of the art understanding of ice formation on wind turbine blades which will lead to the development of an accurate ice detection system and a low power localized heating system (based on graphite coatings). Both innovations will be integrated into a single system which will be validated in real conditions. This project has three specific scientific objectives and three specific technological objectives:

Scientific Objectives

  • To advance ice deposition understanding on and around wind turbine blades.
  • To understand how ice may be detected and measured on wind turbine blades.
  • To develop cutting edge de-icing knowledge.


Technological Objectives

  • To develop and demonstrate a novel ice detection system for the real-time detection of ice formation on wind turbine blades.
  • To fabricate and demonstrate an ultra-efficient, spatially localised, de-icing system utilising a carbon nanotube composite appropriate for installation into the turbine blade at point of manufacture
  • To integrate the developed novel ice detection and de-icing systems into a single, intelligent, unit.
